Here's another one:

Solve for y:

5x - y = 2, subtract 5x from both sides, which gives -y = -5x + 2 ...multiply both sides by -1, which gives y = 5x - 2 ...The slope is 5

They just get a little messier:

Solve for y:

5x - 3y = 2 ...subtract 5x from both sides, which gives -3y = -5x + 2 ...divide both sides by -3, which gives y = ( -5x / -3 ) + ( 2 / -3 ) ...which equals y = (5 / 3)x - (2 / 3) ...The slope is 5 / 3
