Here are some problems to try.  I'll help you with a plan of attack.

Solve   x^2 - 5x = 2

1 set it = 0 first
2 10 second factor attempt -- if it doesn't work, quadranate it


 

Solve   a^3 = a

set it = 0 first (no, you cannot divide both sides by a...
because   a = 0 is a solution!
2 factor

 

Solve   6x^3 - 12x^2 - 2x = 0

1 first rule of factoring
(no, you cannot quadranate it in this form!)
2 10 second factor attempt  >>> quadranator

 

Solve   b^2 - 7 = 0

1 square root trick
