Let's start with something really simple...  If you keep this guy in your head and THINK, you'll always know how to do these.

Look at this guy:

| x | = 3

Think about it...  What could x be?

| -3 | = 3 or | 3 | = 3

So, x = -3   or   x = 3

(We use an "or" since x can't be -3 and 3 at the same time.)

Get this guy stuck in your brain:

| x | = 3

x = -3 or x = 3

Here's another one:

| x | = 5

What could x be?

| -5 | = 5 or | 5 | = 5

So, x = -5   or   x = 5

 

TRY IT:

| x | = 7

What could x be?
