Check it out:

Graph y = ( -3 / 5 )x + 4

1)  It crosses the y-axis at 4, so we start there: 

a graph of the point ( 0 , 4 )

2)  the slope is  -3 / 5  so we

drop down 3 on the graph from the point ( 0 , 4 )

...and run over five on the graph to the point ( 5 , 1 ) ... done!

Let's do another one:

Graphy = 4x - 2

 

1)  It crosses the y-axis at
  y = -2, so we start there:

a graph of the point ( 0 , -2 )

 

2)  The slope is 4 which is really  4 / 1...

rise up 4 on the graph from the point ( 0 , -2 )

...and run over 1 to the point ( 1 , 2 )
