These are arithmetic sequences:

1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , ...

0 , 3 , 6 , 9 , 12 , ...

10 , 5 , 0 , -5 , -10 , ...

Do you see the pattern for how each of these changes?

1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , ... add 1 to get the next guy in the sequence

We add 1 each time.

0 , 3 , 6 , 9 , 12 , ... add 3 to get the next guy in the sequence

We add 3 each time.

10 , 5 , 0 , -5 , -10 , ... subtract 5 to get the next guy in the sequence

We add -5 each time.

So, arithmetic sequences change by adding a number to each term.

We called this number the "difference."
