Let's look at Standard Parabola Guy:

y = x^2

y = -x^2

graph of y = x^2 ... opens towards positives

graph of y = -x^2 ... opens towards negatives

Now, for Sideways Parabola Guy:

x = y^2

x = -y^2

graph of x = y^2 ... opens towards positives

graph of x = - y^2 ... opens towards negatives
